Made by combining the watergrasses Moonj & Khar, this box is traditionally used to keep Roti – or the Indian flatbread. However, you can use it to keep absolutely anything from Jewellery to cookies.

Watergrass & reed are farmed in wetlands from where they are harvested , sun-dried & handcrafted by local artisans. These products are therefore sustainable & eco-friendly, besides providing employment to rural & tribal communities. Their trade is specially empowering for women of these communities as it helps them move towards financial independence.

Wild grasses such as Sikki, Moonj, Sabai, Khar, etc. grow naturally along the banks of water bodies in North Bihar, parts of U.P., Uttrakhand, Orissa, West Bengal & several North-Eastern states of India. Growing upto 4 feet in length, this grass is harvested by local communities, sun-dried & then manually processed to create dolls, baskets, boxes & platters. The golden outer casing is sometimes combined with other wild grasses for the stuffing.
Originally used to make wedding gifts & objects for auspicious & festive occasions, these products are also extremely hardy & with proper care are known to survive across generations of users.
