KREEDA THE BATTLE OF LANKA

Kreeda Games started as a writing assignment on traditional Indian games, which soon evolved into a series of articles for Hindu Young world. Vinita Siddhartha, who headed this effort was flooded by calls  from schools, kids and parents alike to transform this content into real life games and learning tools that we could hands on play and engage with. Thus Kreeda was born – which is an assortment of Indian traditional board, outdoor and other forms of indoor games with a strong focus on environment friendliness by avoiding plastics and using naturally available material.

Games as a conversation starter

The games are very well designed and are aesthetically pleasing to play with. When I played a few of these, they not only acted as a leisure activity but were a great conversation starter and a great way to build the spirit of teamwork. Most of these games imbibe a great sense of healthy competition, mutual tolerance, tactical and strategic thinking skills.

Our top picks

We loved the way some old games were given a more sleek, colorful touch. The hoop stick in particular is an ultra-favourite of mine with a beautifully recreated version of the old cycle tyre – and a cane hoop stick. While inherently it is fun to play with, the color and finish makes it child friendly & significantly more attractive than the usual and stick.

Some of the board games gives a more traditional touch to common games such as Chaupada or Ashta Chemma which are akin to Ludo, Param Pada Sopanam ( Snakes & Ladders), or Kattam Vilayattu which is a version of noughts and crosses.

Some others, however, games which would be on the verge of moving to obscurity if not for brands like Kreeda. A few of these are  Pallanguzhi, Dahdi, etc.

Dahdi is a particular favorite of mine in which the aim is to get as many points as possible by getting three pieces in a row. Two players are given 9 coins each. The players try to move them to get 3 coins in a row. Although the purpose is similar to noughts and crosses, the game is far more complex as coins can be moved and the opponent’s coins can be removed.

All the games are designed in a manner so that these can be carried around, thus making them ideal take-home gifts for parties or to carry along for travel.

But what I found amazing was the way few informational games were designed to make our folklores and mythology easy and fun to access. Search for Sita, Battle of Lanka deserves a special mention.
